Married. Me and Rip. Pssh.
but I think I’m fine with zero kids in my future.”
“Watch, you’ll end up with two,”
“Was that the one who wanted you to call him Daddy?” Grandpa Gus, who had been in the middle of a conversation when I had looked at him two minutes ago, asked out of nowhere.
her grandpa’s best friend
His left cheek twitched. Then his right one did too, and in the single blink of an eye,
Lucas Ripley was smiling at me.
Night’s not getting any younger, baby girl. Let’s go.
“It’s all right, baby girl,” they started.
All I had ever wanted was to be loved.
I was just not going to trust Grandpa Gus again to fix me up any time soon.
“I’m glad you’re good too, baby girl.”
“Add that to our secrets, all right? Just thought you deserved to know.”
“This is a shitty place to meet a stranger, baby girl.”
“But why are you here, baby girl?”
“I brought you fucking lunch.”
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“It’s my business. You are my business.”
“Everything’s all right, baby girl.”
“You don’t gotta do everything alone.” “I’ve never wanted to, Rip.”
“Luna. I’m tired, baby.” Rip sighed, giving me a gentle squeeze.
“All right, baby girl. We’ll stay here.”
“I don’t. Not even a little, baby girl.”
“Take the day off, baby girl. I gotta go into the shop for a few hours, but I’ll come back and help you after that.”
“You look like you need a good rest too, baby girl.”
“Baby, you cried out,” a sugar-sweet voice murmured a moment before what I knew were his fingers reached for my arm, sliding down it until his hand took mine and swallowed it whole.
Rip brushed his dry, warm lips over mine.
Over the corner of my mouth. Over the length of my lips. Just the quickest, lightest, most feather-like kiss of my life.
Rip had kissed me. Me.
“I didn’t mean to hurt you, baby girl.”
“Talk to me outside for a minute, baby girl.”
“Don’t be fucking mad at me anymore.”
“No, baby girl, there was nothing for you to forget.”
“I don’t dislike a single fucking bone in your body, Luna.”
“But I miss the fuck out of you, messing with me all the damn time, provoking me way too much, always fucking laughing and smiling and being a pain in my fucking ass.”
“I don’t want you leaving me alone. I was pissed and you were there, and I shouldn’t have taken it out on you. I don’t want to hurt you. You hear me?”
“I don’t dislike you. Not a little, not at all. How many times do I gotta say that to get it through your head?”
The first flower anyone had ever bought me was because of guilt.
“I always listen to you.”
“You’re never a waste of my time.”
He brought his mouth, his face, his eyes, some of the things I liked the most about him, inches from me. His mouth a lunge away…
“You haven’t listened to a single fucking thing I’ve said, have you? Seen a single thing I’ve done? You the only person who hasn’t put shit together?”
“I don’t know how to give you flowery words and shit like that, Luna. I don’t know how to tell you what you want or need to hear. It’s been a long fucking time since I’ve given a fuck about anybody. Do you understand that?”
“I want my goddamn Luna back,”
“I don’t want you to leave me alone. I want you bugging my ass for random shit again. I wanna see your fucking face first thing in the morning, even if you don’t bring me my coffee anymore. I wanna make you something to eat so you don’t end up with Salmonella from that shit you try to cook,”
“Two fucking weeks and I want it back. You gave me these pieces of you I know you haven’t given to anybody else, and they’re mine. You can’t take ’em back. I need them more than you do, you hear me?”
“I know I fucked up, and I can tell you’re not gonna make this easy on me, and I get it. But I want you to eat a burger with me in the meantime, yeah? Get some ice cream with me. You promised the day of the wreck. Remember?”
“Let’s go eat a fucking burger and some ice cream, baby girl. There’s nothing for you to be scared of. You can trust me.”
“I got you,” he said with so much conviction there was no way to ignore it.
