Night’s not getting any younger, baby girl. Let’s go.
“It’s all right, baby girl,” they started. “You’re a good girl.” “A nice girl.” “The nicest.” “Sweetest.”
He got the next words out of his mouth before the cop interrupted, quietly, gently, and more earnestly than I ever would have imagined. “I’m glad you’re good too, baby girl.”
“If I want to come get you, I’m gonna come get you. Deal with it,” he stated, or more like told me. “You wanna stop at that donut place you like or what?”
“She’s gonna be busy,” a deep male voice answered from somewhere behind me.
Ashton was a good sport because he smiled at me and said, “That’s all right. Maybe tomorrow.” Over my shoulder, Rip spoke up again. “Luna’s gonna be busy tomorrow too.”
“I wanna worry about it. Tell me what’s wrong.”
“Luna,” he growled through his teeth, taking another step forward. That big body seeming to expand before my eyes. “It’s my business. You are my business.”
He tipped his chin up high and kept those blue-green irises on me as he said just about the last thing I ever would have expected from him. “I didn’t mean to hurt you, baby girl.”
You want to meet someone to be your best friend and your fucking partner? I’m right fucking here, baby girl.”
