For Hegel, knowledge is impossible without universal concepts. If he is right – and he surely is – Eastern mysticism and New Ageism are absurd. They are the essence of anti-knowledge. Science, based on perception, would be absurd without mathematics, the quintessence of conception. Science uses mathematics all the time, while having no understanding at all of what mathematics is and why science needs it. Nor does science make any attempt to address mathematics. The scientific method – upon which science is predicated – contains not one step or procedure that could ever elucidate what mathematics is and how it relates to science. Isn’t that amazing? Science cannot even define itself never mind define reality. Its own method prevents it from defining itself. Its method is based on percepts (the observable) and reject concepts (the unobservable). But without concepts, science cannot be defined. It a mere heuristic, a modelling system, and what it observes and models is the world of percepts. The answer to existence, however, is conceptual, rational, logical, and intelligible, not perceptual, observable and empirical. Mathematics is the conceptual answer to existence. Science is a way of mathematically describing observable patterns (percepts). That does not, and never can, explain what reality is. Reality in itself is unobservable. It is conceptual, not perceptual.
