To stand apart is to look at the world (now) from the point of view of the world as it could be (the future), with all of the hope and sorrowful contemplation that this entails.
This is a philosophical way of explaining what telology is -- how we think about shalom / resurrection / the vision God has for the world in theology & what our response should be (not one of in action but total participation in the renewal of creation)
