“She’s devious and cunning and probably has a lot of connections in the world of … villains that we know nothing about. If she could do all this, if she could even steal Ace Anarchy’s helmet, then who knows what else she’s capable of? Finding that charm or figuring out some other way around Agent N—none of it seems like a stretch.”
Adrian smirked. “You know, you have more rebellion in you than anyone wants to give you credit for.” “Yeah…” Max’s mouth twitched, barely revealing the dimple in his right cheek. “I get it from my big brother.”
Danna’s face crumpled apologetically. “I’m so sorry, Adrian, but … it’s her.” Her voice was barely a whisper. “Nova is Nightmare.”
“Evidence of your crimes against society and the Renegades.” He winced, as though he were in physical pain, when he said, “You’re under arrest … Nightmare.”
“Adrian?” He paused, his gaze meeting hers after a short hesitation. Nova swallowed. “It was real,” she whispered. “I hope you know that.” He watched her, unflinching, expressionless. Finally, he said, “I wish I could believe that, Nova. But we both know it’s just one more lie.”
He didn’t care about any of that. Hope and clarity swelled inside him. Nova was innocent.
“It was always real for me, too,” he finally said, his voice barely a whisper. “I hope you know that.”
This was real. In spite of everything, her feelings for Adrian Everhart were real, and she was going to keep this moment pinned inside her heart for the rest of her life. No matter what the future held, she would cherish this kiss, and his words, forever.
She had fallen in love with these people, who had taken her in and trusted her. And yet she betrayed them. To know that they would go on despising her for the rest of their lives left her feeling almost as hollowed out as the knowledge that Ace would never again look at her with beaming pride. “Yeah, I am afraid that I’m going to fail again,” she said, still peering into the nothingness of Phobia’s face. “But one cannot be brave who has no fear.”
“He created Phobia,” she whispered, taking the child’s drawing from Narcissa and inspecting it with mounting dread. She was startled to find her vision misting as she tried to imagine what Adrian would feel if he knew the truth. “He created the monster that killed his mother.”
“And you’re beyond relevant. You’re, like, the thing that other things try to be relevant to. And you’re fierce and loyal and crazy adorable when you’re playing Battle to the Death, and I’ll even admit, okay, it’s not easy to say this, but you’re right. You beat me in that last game, fair and square, even though I—” “Oscar, stop!” she said, laughing outright now. “I get it. Thank you.” He paused and cleared his throat. “Right. Yeah. Sorry. Just saying.” He hesitated, his focus landing on their entwined hands. He gulped. “Just … one more thing?” Ruby faked an exasperated eye roll. “Oh, if you

“Everyone has a nightmare,” she said. “I guess I’m yours.”
Beside him, Nova lifted the gun so his dad could see it, holding it against Adrian’s temple. Adrian turned his head to look at her, not shying away even as the cool barrel pressed into his forehead. “You’re not fooling me with that.” She ignored him, her focus on the scene below.
Even as Adrian lifted his head, refusing to cower from his fate, Captain Chromium pulled back his arm and heaved the spear with all his extraordinary might at the bell tower. He sent it straight at Nova.
“We’ve got nothing else to lie about, right? You’re Nightmare. I’m the Sentinel. Ace Anarchy is your uncle. You and I might be archenemies. And yet…” He shrugged, a little hapless. “Somehow, I still want to kiss you.” Her skin tingled. “You do?” “As much as ever.” And then, he did. The kiss was more tender than the passionate kisses they’d shared before, full of hunger and urgency. This was more patient. More knowing. Utterly devoid of secrets.
