“I think Nightmare has been
I can’t help but hope that someday I might have a chance to thank him.”
Was Adrian the blackmailer?
“It fits the setting perfectly. Like it was made for it.”
“Frostbite stabbed me, not Nightmare.”
“Narcissa?”
She was out of time. Danna could become human again at any minute. Maybe she already had. How long before everyone knew the truth?
“Nova is Nightmare.”
“I’m confiscating the bracelet as potential evidence,”
“You’re under arrest … Nightmare.”
I could be in love with her.
A hint of desperation that unnerved him. A whisper of intuition told him she was lying. Would she really submit it to HQ?
Nightmare must die—and I want to be the one to do it.”
“You, Frostbite, may see to the death of Nightmare,
“Ace Anarchy is dead.”
“Why wait around here for the next week? What if we sneaked you out of here instead?”
“I didn’t think you got any power from Nightmare.”
The Bandit could fly.
Where had they taken Winston after he’d been neutralized?
They dragged together and twisted into familiar shapes, spelling out a message.
Nightmare?
Ace Anarchy’s helmet.
Nova was innocent.
And also … boyfriend?
“Uncle?”
This was real. In spite of everything, her feelings for Adrian Everhart were real,
How many times had she heard Phobia say that?
Had Phobia killed Lady Indomitable? Had he murdered Adrian’s mom?
What if she wasn’t either a hero or a villain? What if she was both?
if all went right, then the Renegades would be spared.
“But one cannot be brave who has no fear.”
“This bullet gave me my powers!
A scythe.
“He created Phobia,”
“He created the monster that killed his mother.”
“The stuff of stars,”
and he made this magnificent gem as well.”
“He hid it inside of you.”
“Perhaps it was intended to be a weapon, like the helmet.”
The day her parents had been murdered, her father had said to her that he hoped the bracelet would put right some of the injuries he’d caused the world.
Perhaps her father had made a weapon that was even stronger than the helmet. A weapon that was strong enough to defeat even the invincible Captain Chromium.
“Not a big deal? I’m trying to tell the girl of my dreams that she’s, you know … the girl of my dreams! That’s the biggest deal of my life!” He shook his head, his brow creased with anxiety. “And I’m worried I’ll screw it up.”
It rendered him almost unrecognizable.
But in those moments, Adrian had been forced to question who the true villains were.
I am not sorry to be free of my powers.”
But, as the Renegades were beginning to realize, that wasn’t happening.
“My power. It’s gone.”
“Agent N,” said Adrian. “The stingers have Agent N on them.”
He had neutralized a member of the Council.
“We were friends, weren’t we?” He coughed. A bit of blood sprayed across his bottom lip. “I know I wasn’t always … a good friend … but I … I liked having you around, back then. When you were little. It was nice to be … a kid … again.”
