Looking back, that’s the point my obsession spun out of control. I should have maintained my distance. But I couldn’t. Eleven years spent away didn’t dilute my craving—it only made it fester.
But the thing about plans is… They never work out like you expect them to. Sometimes life throws you an innocent, young, blonde…curveball.
“Just between us girls, is it weird having a father who’s only a few years older than you?”
“He’s my stepfather.” Squaring my shoulders, I find my resolve. “And he’s only Black Hallows’ most eligible bachelor because my mother is dead, you heartless bitch.”
Sweet baby Jesus in a manger.
“This asshole from the Independent Chronicle came here to remind me that my mother croaking made you Black Hallows’ most eligible bachelor…and because the town still hasn’t found a new whore to point fingers at, I must be spreading my legs for you.”
My mother’s been dead for over a year now, and Lord knows I haven’t spent more than a second grieving the woman who treated me like her life’s greatest mistake instead of her daughter.
Except for that one night.
I never meant for anyone to get ahold of the letters I wrote my seventh-grade teacher, Mr. Delany.
He ended up telling everyone who would listen that I was a mentally ill stalker who was obsessed and blackmailing him because I was angry he turned down my advances.
If I had it my way, I’d be the dirty little secret he takes to his bed every night instead of his doting little stepdaughter.
“Well, if I’m an angel, what would that make you?” “Right now?” He leans in, his mouth a mere centimeter from the fluid I’m teasing him with. “The Devil.” He sucks my fingers into his mouth and groans. “Because one taste of you won’t be enough.”
In other words—it’s obviously Cain.
AngelBaby123: Where were you the night the fire happened that killed your family? AngelBaby123: Are you there? AngelBaby123: Hello?
One mistake three weeks ago turned Eden from my sick little fantasy …to my greatest liability.
She’s my forbidden fruit.
If she’ll disclose it to a stranger on the internet, what’s to stop her from telling anyone else?
Pressing a button on my chair, I release the divider between the main tank and another one that’s hidden out of view. The one containing a very angry, very hungry red-bellied piranha. In less than a minute…all my pretty fish are dead. They never saw it coming.
I’m a girl with a permanent broken heart. Because I’m in love with a man I can never have.
Devil: Because it’s easier to hurt the person you love when they’re not the person you should love. It’s easier to push them away because your life would be so much better if you did.
She claimed she was a good girl and wanted to make sure I was serious about her before we took it to the next level.
“Cain, I’m so—” She slaps Damien’s shoulder. “Stop. My boyfriend’s here.” “Hold on,” Damien barks, his thrusts picking up speed. “You can have her back in a minute, bro. Just need to bust this nut first.”
Never let them see you sweat. My father’s words of wisdom echo through the walls of my skull. The key to surviving any scandal is to act like there isn’t one.
“I fucked you twice in the same week.” He takes another long drag off his cigarette. “And only because I thought you already had a boyfriend and therefore not looking for one.” Well, this is awkward.
Telling Damien King he’s an asshole is like telling a deaf person they can’t hear. Utterly pointless.
What started out as a regular argument last week ended with my brother taking a chair to my back.
My angel has no idea the man she loves is going to crush her soul before the night is over.
Pulling out my phone, I open the app and send a message. Devil: How about I do something to help you relax?
Despite his unhurried actions, his touch feels a little rougher than last time, but not in a bad way.
gruff voice barely above a whisper. He must be as turned on as I am because it’s even huskier than usual.
“I’m pretty sure we’re going to hell.” “I own a timeshare there.” He flashes me a quick evil grin as he shifts the car into drive. “The weather’s beautiful this time of year.”
“While they were eating, I dumped my new red-bellied piranha in the tank.” His teeth flash white. “And fed my fish.”
and a woman standing nearby catches my eye. She’s wearing a striking black and red dress.
He shifts his cheek on the pillow a little to look at me. “Are you in love with me?” That’s a weird fucking question. “I’m not sure.”
I can feel the color drain from my face. No black eye or split lip. He’s not Cain.
“Man, I heard you were a freak but—” He stops mid-sentence, his face lighting up. “Holy shit.” He starts laughing as he looks between me and the locker. “You thought I was my brother, didn’t you? This is…wow. I knew he was spending time with a buddy lately, but I didn’t think it was that kind of buddy.” He laughs harder. “Wait until my dad hears about—”
“Didn’t mean to insinuate you were a faggot. My bad.”
Smirking, I blow a kiss to his corpse. “So long, brother. Looks like a spot just opened up after all. I’ll be sure to make the most of my time at Harvard.”
“Are you gonna tell me what happened?” He spins around. “Oh, right.” His expression turns to stone. “My father and brother died.” His dark eyes cut to mine. “House fire.”
“The investigators found something unusual—or rather—two unusual things under Caleb’s pillow.” “Like what?” “From what they can tell it’s a pair of women’s underwear…and what appears to be a tarot card.”
And deep down, no matter how good we think we are…we’re all a little evil inside. The devil was once an angel. Not the other way around.
But it’s either her or Cain. And I’ll always choose Cain.
“Shortly after they arrived home from the courthouse, Mrs. Miller’s husband beat her to death, and then shot himself.”
This isn’t a mistake or a lapse in judgment. He recorded that conversation for one reason and one reason only. To set me up to take the fall. And that can only mean one thing. Cain never felt the same way for me as I do for him. He just wanted me to believe he did.
My partner. The object of my fascination…the person I thought was my reward for all the bad shit I’ve been through…is a traitor.
