shame had kind of faded from the palette of primary human emotions in recent years, replaced by the more active vapours like outrage, indignation, pity, envy, and embarrassment but never ever something as adhesive and persistent as shame. It was as if it had disappeared from human consciousness, from language as well.

if the Government couldn’t even root some religious nuts out of a gopher hole, then what else was beyond its competency, and maybe it shouldn’t be able to tell us what kind of light bulbs we can have or how much water can be in a toilet flush or anything else of consequence. Maybe it should just leave us alone; maybe those Mustard Seed people were onto something.
