A fundamental characteristic of biological organisms is that they must move forward, toward those things that satiate biological needs and away from those things that render life impossible. This encapsulates two basic motivational drives: approach and avoidance. Yet, as people, we are not motivated simply to fulfill biological needs or avoid natural predators; we desire and move toward those things that make life worth living in the first place.
