(Breastfeeding was supposed to be painless they told us. Breastfeeding was beautiful, they said. Well, we would like to drag their nipples over asphalt and see how painless and beautiful they thought it was.)

It was the only way to hear the whispers.

“You’re tired. It’s okay to feel this way.”

The worst

how convenient to always have a man nearby to explain our pesky emotions!

Everything was as it should be because if it weren’t, surely Dr. Tanaka would have noticed.

(Because we knew this logic: we were always supposed to be thankful when anyone thought we were pretty.)

Though it was only March, the spreadsheet turned us all into Santa Clauses. We were making the list, checking it twice, trying to figure out who was naughty or nice.

So when we said that we would prefer not to have to be asked to smile on top of working, we meant that: we would like to do our jobs, please. When we said that we would like not to hear a comment about the length of our skirt, we meant that: we would like to do our jobs, please. When we said that we would like not to have someone try to touch us in our office, we meant that: we would like to do our jobs. Please.
