When Bloomfield, New Mexico, lost a court battle over a Ten Commandments monument displayed in front of City Hall, Mayor Scott Eckstein was “surprised (by the decision) and had never really considered the judge ruling against it because it’s a historical document just like the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.”57 The city’s reliance on bad history cost the taxpayers $700,000.58 The commandments are ubiquitous not just because of Hollywood promoters, but because they are argued to be the basis of American law and morality.59 They are not.
