The very familiar John 3:16 verse is constantly quoted apart from its context, which is misleading: “God so loved the world (kosmos) that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” The reference to condemnation is significant. The Son comes to judge the world, but not to condemn it. The implication is clear: the world deserves condemnation, but will be saved instead, through the Son.
