The death of a High Priest is also important in the law. A man who accidentally kills his neighbor may flee to a city of refuge and live there in safety. When the High Priest dies, the blood he shed on the land is cleansed and he may return home (Num. 35:22–34). For forty years, the wilderness has been a “city of refuge” for all Israel. When Aaron dies, they are allowed to enter the land of promise.
