The attachment to the three gunas is the cause of birth. Attachment to sattvaguna, rajo guna or tamoguna or their combinations are the cause of rebirth on the planet. So when the consciousness knows that I am not these gunas, I am just the witness for the gunas then you rise to another level which is already present in you. This is Purusha.
