Charcoal makers were paid around ten cents per wagon load of charcoal, and within less than a decade they had slaughtered the once-common high altitude pine tree forests of the area (and, incidentally, eradicating the chief source of winter protein for the Southern Paiutes who depended on piñon pine nuts to survive).
