The wolf sighed heavily, as if extremely annoyed, and then, out of nowhere, licked Cooper’s cheek. One quick swipe on the non-bloody side that was still hard enough to move the flesh of his face. Cooper didn’t budge. Didn’t think. Just stared. The wolf stared back, ear continually swiveling back and forth, monitoring something outside. “Uh, thanks, but I have a boyfriend?” Cooper whispered, unsure.
“It’s barbaric and unnecessary, and I’m thoroughly ashamed of myself for doing it,” Park said, his chin drawing circles in Cooper’s shoulder now. “But I hate that his scent is all over you.” He whispered that last part and slid his hands up and down Cooper’s arms. “I want you to smell like us again.”
Mai moved backward quickly, exhaling. When his vision cleared, Cooper could see her sharing a long, searching look with Park, who had no trouble meeting her eye. In fact, he looked angry—or defiant—and his lip was curling as if he was this close to snarling.
Oh shit. She’s realizing he’s not a werewolf isn’t she. Fucking Park didn’t tell his family he was human
It abso-fucking-lutely was not fine. But what could he do? Was Cooper uncomfortable at the lack of a warm welcome? Of course. Was he hurt and confused that Park had put him in this position by not telling anyone he was bringing home a human or a BSI agent? Obviously. But a surprising and intense defiance had risen up under the disbelieving gaze of the family. There was no way in hell he wanted any of them to see a single crack in their relationship.
He was squeezing past an annoyed-looking Stuart, wood chair making monstrous scraping sounds across the floor, when Lorelei gasped. “Stop! If you sit, there will be thirteen at the table.”
I’m so fucking mad right now. Why the fuck would Park bring him blind into all this shit? This is just fucking horrible
“Please,” Cooper groaned, not even sure what he was asking for at this point. To come now? To never stop? “Anything,” Park promised. “You can have anything you want.” “I want to be good for you.” “You are,” Park said fiercely. “So good. I’m not ashamed of you. I could never be,” he added, squeezing his hip.
“I wasn’t trying to hide you or anything about you from anyone. I’m so proud of you, so proud I get to be with you, to be part of your life. That you chose me.”
Park’s lips moved against the back of his neck. “If it was up to me, I’d keep you marked up and full of my come all the time so everyone knows you’re mine. Can I do that?” He grazed his teeth against Cooper’s skin. “Yes, do it. Anything. Mark me. Give it to me. Fill me up so everyone knows who I belong to.”
“Joe and I dedicated our lives to creating a safe territory for wolves, and it is my turn to pass that to my children and the children of my children. So yes, they are my business. Oliver is my business. And you, a tool of the people who hunt and steal from us, think you can walk in here and just take him from me?”
He ran, slipping in the snow, and threw himself onto Helena without a second thought. For a millisecond he felt her body resist, felt her superior strength stop him midflight like a brick wall. It knocked the wind right out of his lungs and he barely registered a prickle of pain in his leg before they both crashed down into the snow. Cooper shielded her with his body, his own hands instinctively covering the back of his head.
“Mr. Dayton.” Helena played thoughtfully with today’s heavy necklace at her throat—some sort of intricate brass knot. “Remember. No cops. No BSI. You have no proof of what happened today and no one here will back your story.” The others stared solemnly at him in agreement. “We deal with this on our own.”
“If you feel them trying to dominate or intimidate you, the best reaction is no reaction. Let’s practice.” He’d crawled over Cooper’s splayed body, chest out, chin up, suddenly seeming twice his normal size. “Roar,” he’d said, entirely seriously. Cooper couldn’t help it. He’d just surged up and kissed him. “That is not how I want you disarming threatening wolves,” Park had said sternly.
Cooper shook his head. “Why would I want that? What am I supposed to be doing on this hike? Trying to start a...a...” “Investigation?” Park suggested. “Threesome?” Cooper finished. Park choked. “Okay. We’re obviously not a couple that should be trying to finish each other’s sentences.”
“Fuck, your mouth is sweet,” Cooper said, grinding his ass down into the seat to keep his hips from bucking. “Only sweet for you,” Park murmured, pulling off, then dipping back down and taking him so deep. “That’s right you are,” Cooper gasped. “Can’t let anyone else have you like this. Out there you have to be tough and strong. But in here you’re so sweet and soft and eager to please. Just for me.”
He didn’t say “It’s okay” because it wasn’t, or “I know” because he didn’t. He didn’t say “I’m sorry” because it was an empty, ritualistic platitude, or “You don’t need her” because need had nothing do with it. It was about want. And at some point, at least once in a lifetime, no matter who or why or what came before, everyone wants their mom.
One person can’t love you enough to make up for all the people who don’t, but Cooper wasn’t trying for all the people. Just the one. Just for right now.
“You want me to ride you like this in our bed?” Cooper said. “Want me to take you pressed against the door of our home when we can’t wait to get to our room?” “Yes!” Park cried out. “Anywhere. Anyhow.”
“Just want to please you. Love to make you happy. Love to love you. Please don’t make me stop loving you.”
“You’ve seen the worst of me. You are the best of me. I won’t ever risk losing that again.” His thumb started stroking the back of Cooper’s hand. They kissed, too exhausted for anything fancier than lips touching. “Ask me anything,” Park said seriously when they pulled back. “Anything at all, and I swear I’ll tell you all the truth.”
“So what, you follow him now? Is he your human alpha?” “Yes,” Park said simply. “He is.” Cooper glanced at him, startled, but Park did not meet his eye. He stared at his family, his ex-pack, one by one. “He is.” After a beat, Mai and Jackie, holding hands, walked across the room and stood behind Cooper, too. Marcus’s face slackened in shock. But before he could say anything, Camille and Ricky crossed the room as well. Lorelei and Tim were looking at each other, having the sort of silent conversation that only lifelong friends could.
“Cooper,” Park said, still laughing. “I don’t need to rejoin them to be part of a pack. I’m already part of a pack.” “What...?” “Yours, you dope.” Cooper blinked at him. “Mine? You’re—What?” Park tilted his head and a slight crease of worry appeared between his eyes. “As long as you still want me.”
“Well, granted, you’re not shining your brightest right now,” Park said wryly. “But normally you have one of the highest Alpha Quotients I’ve ever seen. You’re so fiercely independent you fight anyone who’s ever tried to control you, you go rushing into danger headfirst with no apparent concern for your life and you have zero hesitation in bossing me around. Why is this surprising to you?”
