Hugh also spent quite a lot of time watching the librarians’ origami golems. Many of the librarians were paper mages, and crafted folded paper golems to accomplish a wide array of tasks.

Hugh hadn’t ever heard anything like this about Emblin before. Everyone back home said that the reason there were no mages there was because they’d driven them all out in the centuries after the fall of the Ithonian Empire.

This volume is strictly forbidden from being read, except by those ranked at least Bishop or higher in the Church of The Eternal Heavenly Flame. In it are detailed some of the foulest, most pernicious pieces of magic ever devised. This volume only exists in order to offer ways to defeat these spells, in the off chance these heresies ever resurface and must be confronted again. Be warned, the spells grow progressively more deranged towards the end of the book. The original scribe was driven quite insane by recording them, and ended up having to be committed to an asylum.

“They’re all visibly terrifying,” Sabae said. “You’re in the first group, and you look… utterly normal. No weird tattoos, no bonded magical weapons passed down through your family, no familiar. No costume to try and make yourself look more dangerous, either. Their imaginations must be running wild trying to figure out what kind of mage you are.”
