He had nothing else. He didn’t have any friends. No one from Emblin ever wrote him, ashamed that a family of good Emblin stock should have a mage in it. He’d been rushed off to Skyhold almost the instant his mage gifts became apparent. It was worth it to his family to hide their shame. Not that they’d ever had any pride in him in the first place. Hugh slammed his door shut, slid down to the floor, and then buried his head between his knees to cry.
“You’re not useless, Talia.” Alustin looked at Sabae, then at Hugh. “None of you are useless. None of you have failed as mages. The Academy has failed all of you. You were expected to simply conform to the same curriculum as everyone else, but magic isn’t that rigid.” “What sort of nonse…”, Talia said. Alustin talked right over her. “I didn’t pick you out of pity, or because I wanted extra hands to sort through papers. Alustin took a deep breath and seemed to calm down. “I meant to wait until later to discuss this with each of you individually, but it seems that we should get this over with now. Each of you has falsely been led to believe themselves useless as a mage. I intend to prove otherwise.”
“Hugh, if he’d been any weaker, never would have manifested any abilities at all. He was, however, born with an astonishingly powerful talent- at only fifteen, his mana reserves are as large as those of many fully trained mages. As he gets older and farther along in his training, they will only grow even further.” Hugh had what now?
“Will imbuing can be learned, but there’s only one type of mage that has no natural affinities alongside a naturally occurring will imbuing talent.”
Hugh could feel the other two apprentices staring at him. “You, Hugh, are what is known as a warlock.”
“I can’t be having any student of mine sleeping on a bed of trash.” It was signed Alustin Haber, Librarian Errant.
“Don’t stick around after tweaking a dragon’s tail, Sabae!” Sabae blinked, and turned to follow Hugh and Talia.
