“The agreement was that I get married to you. It was not to be married to you.”
He had wanted to be rich; now he was rich. That had not been enough. He had wanted high society to receive him; now they did. That was not enough.
“So if you want me to honor our agreement, you shall have to stop laughing at me and try communicating for once.”
“You’re not my wife,” he said. “We just happen to be married to each other.”
Her logic was wrong, utterly wrong, but emotions had a way of making the worst logic seem right.
“If only someone would kidnap me.” Lucy might not have acquired a husband in London, but she had managed to acquire a new, world-weary drawl. “What I wouldn’t give for a man with some actual gumption.”
