Changing the interconnections has a more significant impact on the system as a whole.
Understanding the dynamics of stocks and flows and their behaviors over time can help you see the system’s behavior as a whole.
Understanding the mental models behind these cause and effect connections helps to acknowledge the mechanisms responsible for creating certain behaviors.
A system’s structure is formed by its stocks, flows, and feedback loops.
The structure is made visible through causal loop diagrams, completed with boxes, arrows, and thought bubbles.
The boundaries we decide to draw around systems are based on the questions we are trying to answer and the problems we are trying to solve.
Moving our focus from the plentiful factors to the next potentially limiting factor is what understanding and ultimately controlling the growth of a system is all about.
No matter the form an addiction takes, the structure of the system looks the same.
In a system, in a similar situation, we collectively create a shared vision, mission, and set of core values. That's how we bring meaningful and lasting changes.
get a more complete and accurate picture of the problem before coming up with a solution.
Some kind of payoff has to be built in the system that kept people perpetuating the problems.
Being aware of this inbuilt payoff mechanism is the first step to overcome the old patterns of behavior.
Stories are a way to share our experiences with others,
To tell a system story, there must be some transformations in the way people think:
move from blaming others and outside forces to accepting personal responsibility for their contribution to the problem
shift their focus from quickly reacting to immediate problems (school shooting, low-performing stock market) to directing their attention toward understanding the deeper system structures that cause those events to happen.
A system story increases self-awareness.
the structure is where the vast majority of damage will come from as the trends and events will continue to repeat.
“the energy for change is mobilized by establishing a discrepancy between what people want and where they are.
Creating a shared understanding is crucial to see why the current problems exist and the best solutions.
cultivated a shared vision of what successful change would look like and set their common purpose.
strong systems thinkers also develop themselves in emotional, behavioral, physical, and spiritual areas.
