The writer of the proverb seems to assume we can have “many” such folk around. That is certainly more true today than it’s ever been. Technology has made it easier than ever to have an abundance of companions. Social media keeps us in touch with dramatically more people than we could otherwise keep up with—all of those school friends and old work colleagues, the former neighbors, even people we’ve dated.
