But here or there, a life could be saved; and the lives they were saving might save others. Small effects multiplied. That was what kept them at the work. And whether or not the Nazis occupied southern France, whether or not the Spanish borders remained open, the work would go on, at least as long as Varian could find a way to stay in France.
