The absurdity of consumerism has reached a height in the form of fashions and lifestyles adopted by the rich to seem like the exceptionally poor. Hence the fashion for extreme thinness. Throughout history, being thin has been a sign of poverty, and the opposite for wealth. The very words for honour and weight are, in most languages, the same or closely similar. Now these values are reversed. Or take the fashion for wildly expensive ripped jeans designed with great skill to look as if one had nothing else to wear, and they had been worn for years, their colour faded and their fabric torn.
