On August 12 the deputy chief engineer of the plant came back from a trip to Kiev bearing a summons with Brukhanov’s name on it, instructing him to report, at 10:00 a.m. the next day, to room 205 of the prosecutor’s office, on Reznitskaya Street in Kiev. There, after three further hours of interrogation and an hour’s break for lunch, Brukhanov was formally charged, under Article 220, paragraph 2, of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, with “a breach of safety regulations in explosion-prone plants or facilities” and arrested.
