In 1870 a wood-carver named Frantisek Rint was given the job of sorting out the accumulated heaps and began to transform the bones of between 40,000 and 70,000 people into outrageously elaborate decorations and furnishings for the chapel. There are chandeliers, coats of arms and fancy buttressing, all constructed from human bones.
