Some confused being broken with being weak, but anything can break, no matter how strong. The one thing you can never judge in a man, he recited, is what makes him break. But you can learn from him, to avoid having that same flaw.
Honest and useful had become increasingly exclusive characteristics in her friends. If Marion had a few moments to throw away, she might have considered what that meant.
They had actually hated each other at first—Guy hated Simon since he was so Scottish, and Simon hated everyone else because he was so Scottish.
“Alright. You’re the funny one,” William nudged Robin’s ribs, “why is he laughing?” Robin raised a grim eyebrow. “How am I the funny one?” “Solid point.” William nodded. “I’ll correct. You’re the one who thinks he’s funny.” Robin’s head wobbled back and forth in consideration. “Thank you. And I have no idea.”
“Some people would argue,” the earl stood to search for his wineskin, “that if you commit yourself to noble acts in this life, you’ll be rewarded in the next.” “Some people will believe anything,” Robin laughed. “They only say that so we, the living, don’t feel so bad when they, the dead, get all dead.”
Guy smiled exactly wide enough that he could not be accused of frowning, and no more.
“So. You’re here to talk about stolen supplies.” William choked to answer. “I am.” “They’ve been missing for months. How confident are you with your understanding of the word urgent?”
“You’re sometimes much smarter than me, Gisbourne,” he’d say into his drink, as was his style. “But I’m the one smart enough to have you as captain. Your successes are my successes, too. But your failures, you don’t get to keep those. They’re mine, and mine alone.”
Anything unexpected is an opportunity,
Lady Delaney was a furious weaving of self-indulgence and self-pity, and Arable took a moment to consider how much more pleasant she would be were she falling down a well.
Of all the words in the world, Robin had none of them.
Do you play chess?” Roger assented with a grumble. “Do you ever curse the gods of chess that your bishops only move diagonally? No? You and Waleran both, whenever you lose at politics, you blame the rules of the game.” She stood, lazily, but there was a sharpness to her teeth. “Perhaps you should simply play it better.”
Nothing was left where Morg stood, just meat. “I didn’t mean to kill him.” Wendenal sighed. “That may rank as the most useless thing I’ve ever heard a man say. Take him to a cell.”
To Robin’s horror, it appeared Alan’s instincts in this situation were to put his hands out to his sides in the hopes of looking like a tree. The cloaked man, shockingly, saw through Alan’s disguise.
You can’t prepare to be afraid, you can only get better at it over time.
“reading is the opposite of wasting time. There is no finer way to enjoy a sliver of one’s life than by enjoying the entirety of another’s.”
“Never use the word ‘so,’” he announced, clapping his book closed to escort her down the hall. “It’s the worst word in the English language. If you modify any word at all with the word ‘so’, then it should become another word. If I were ‘so interesting,’ well then I would become ‘intriguing.’ And if I were ‘so intriguing,’ I would become ‘fascinating.’ If I were ‘so fascinating,’ well then I must be ‘mesmerizing.’” “And what if you were ‘so mesmerizing’?” “I’m not.”
