You can bleed too much—maternal hemorrhage is a possible postbirth complication. Since you know you should bleed some, it can be hard to know how much is too much. If you’re not sure, ask. If you see a clot and think, Is that the size of a fist, or just a bit smaller?, don’t wait around measuring it for yourself—buzz the nurse. The passing of clots will die down after a couple of days, but you’ll keep bleeding—first like a heavy period, then a lighter period—for weeks.
