Whilst taking measurements of depth and water temperature, they discovered a coral reef growing out of the seabed, of such an extent that Ross estimated it might ‘in future ages form an island between New South Wales and New Zealand’. It is almost heart-breaking to read of coral growing, when now it seems almost everywhere to be shrinking.
