The Americans are keen to scale down their political and military investment in the region due to a reduction in their energy-import requirements; if they do withdraw, then China, and to a lesser extent India, may have to get involved in equal proportion to the loss of interest. The Chinese are already major players in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Iran.
