After all, as an article in the 1889 edition of the Scots Observer states: ‘Women, of course, can never be as good golfers as men. But this is only because they are not so good at anything they try as men are – not even at packing a bag or flavouring a sauce. Also, it must be allowed, they can never get as much pure amusement from this or from any game.’
