Charged with defending an obviously flawed organisation against claims that leaving it would deliver utopia, they had nothing in their arsenal save a status quo that many found profoundly unsatisfactory. If the debate stays simplistic and devoid of detail then it is surprisingly difficult to challenge someone who is offering an alternative to the status quo. You don’t like the way things are?
