These complainers see themselves as the victims of everyone and everything imaginable yet assume responsibility for nothing. The feeling of powerlessness parallels feeling like a victim. Externally motivated people focus outward on what others do to them, an area they cannot control. They don’t focus inward on their own behavior or on what they can do and can control. Internal control is not really missing in people who are externally motivated, but they can’t see it because they’re focused on what was done to them as opposed to what they can do about it.
