The upshot is that particular valuable things command a kind of loyalty. They do not become dispensable the minute we could replace them with something of greater value. Conservatives of Cohen’s sort will be (defeasibly) disposed to retain particular valuable things even if it means forgoing the opportunity to make things in general as valuable as possible.3
