I’d been at the cabin for two days when the fire started. I hadn’t known about it because I hadn’t turned the television on, or my phone. I couldn’t see out of my left eye anyway, and the throbbing in my jaw below my right ear was enough for me to stay in the dark and quiet with the blinds drawn, hidden from the rest of the world. I hadn’t eaten. I’d gotten out of bed to vomit once, only to crawl back under the covers wishing for a different life. A different me, waiting for sleep to numb me.
