someone at the door spoke. “There you are.” It was loud and unexpected, and it scared the crap out of me. But Aubrey’s reaction was the kind of fear that made my blood run cold. He almost turned himself inside out. He pushed back and pulled his legs up and threw his hands out, and his face… his face. My God, I’ll never forget the look on his face. And I thought I’d seen fear before. This wasn’t a startled fear. This was a scared-for-my-life kind of fear. Instinctively, I put myself between him and the person who spoke.
