“Have you checked him for an overinflated ego yet?” teased Ruby. “I’d hate for him to float away on us.”
Oh, Smokescreen! I’ve been dreaming of your smoldering smokiness all my life!”
Sometimes Nova felt like the Renegades of the past had more in common with the Anarchists than anyone dared to admit.
He was grinning—that open, heart-stopping smile that she absolutely loathed.
The look Hugh Everhart was giving her, she couldn’t help but notice, seemed borderline . . . fatherly. He had no right to be proud of Nova or any of her accomplishments, when it was because of him that she didn’t have her own father to look at her that way.
It was time that society realized they’d given all the power to the Renegades and were receiving only empty promises in return.
To have your power taken away, against your will . . . wasn’t this a violation of prodigy rights, as much as any abuse they’d suffered before the Age of Anarchy?
To change a prodigy on such a fundamental level, to alter the essence of who they were, merely because they broke a rule that they had never agreed to in the first place?
Did the Council truly believe they had the right to decide who should be allowed to be a prodigy, and who shouldn’t?
to be used as a defensive measure against any prodigy who demonstrates an act of violence against a Renegade or civilian, or who demonstrates willful defiance of the code.”
“They’re giving us the power to just . . . use this stuff, against anyone we feel like, no evidence of a crime required?” She shook her head. “How can that be within their code?”
“You’re not going to remark on all the mind-blowing things I can do?” Ruby gestured halfheartedly in Oscar’s direction. “Oscar can eat two extra-large pizzas in one sitting while quoting the entire third season of Star Avengers from memory.” Oscar nodded solemnly. “It’s hard to believe I even exist.”
“Or what if someone were to turn their life around and start using their power to help people? Agent N would take that choice away from them.
This is oppression, pure and simple. If they succeed, the Renegades will be putting themselves even higher above everyone else than they already have. There will be no one to challenge . . . us. No one to stand in our way or keep us from achieving total power,
“How nice to see you,” said Honey. “I was beginning to think someone might have conducted an exorcism and sent you back to the underworld.” “You believe that’s where I’m from?” said Phobia, his raspy voice eerier than usual in the dank chamber. Honey hummed to herself. “Well, I don’t think you’re from the suburbs.”
“Afraid to feel too deeply, afraid that the truth will—”
Adrian and Nova both turned their legs toward each other to make room for him to pass, their knees knocking together. “Sorry,” Adrian muttered,
Still squeezing Oscar’s wrist,
Oscar looked down once at her hand, then over at Adrian with a giddy yet panicked expression.
Nova’s gaze skipped down to Adrian’s lips. She gulped and leaned forward. Adrian took in a sudden breath and, before Nova knew what was happening, he had jumped to his feet and started brushing himself off. “Yeah, wow, we need to hurry,”
Sweet rot. She had tried to kiss him and . . . he had rejected her.
“She would have hurt you.” Surprise warmed his features. “Nova . . .” She turned away, her heart fluttering with the way he was looking at her. Then—“Nova.” She glanced up again, and Adrian was suddenly grinning. He pointed to something behind her. Nova peered up. Her shoulders fell. Winston’s puppet,
I.... adrian my dude are you okay? Shes spilling her heart out and you only care to find the puppet??
Nova was standing not far from the lobby’s information desk, staring up into the quarantine with her mouth hanging open. “Act normal,” Adrian whispered, his glee quickly overcoming his surprise. He elbowed Max in the side and they both raised their hands and waved.
“The poor security guard on duty nearly had a heart attack when he saw this.”
“So, was that all?” His dads traded another look, and Adrian bristled on the inside. What was with all the silent looks these days? Didn’t they know he could see them? Then they both sighed, practically in unison.
Ooohhh??? They know something??
Hold up, massive brain moment!! So cap chrom is the only one immune to max. Lady abominable had her fly powers taken my max and thats how she died. What if cap chrom used max to take away her powers because she was compromised aka becoming an anarchist???!!!! Ooohh maaii gaadddd
“only pretentious, small-minded individuals who seek to inflate their own importance by demoralizing everyone else.”
“But if it weren’t for him, prodigies would still be living in fear. Persecuted, victimized, abused . . . He created a world where prodigies could stand up for themselves. To declare what we are and not be afraid that we’ll be punished for it. He fought for the rights of all prodigies. Whereas the Renegades only seem interested in defending prodigies who agree to their code.”
“The Renegades wouldn’t have existed without Ace Anarchy.”
