What researchers have found is that the more partisan the individual and the issue they are evaluating, the more directional their reasoning will be. They will weigh evidence more heavily if it supports their partisan identity. They will dismiss evidence that is against the party line. Individuals are easily primed (affected subconsciously by a stimulus) as well.
