Naive evolutionary thinking can also be teleological—for example, the argument that birds evolved feathers so that they could fly, when in fact, feathers likely had to evolve prior to flight, and bird ancestors did not know they would ultimately use feathers for flying. Evolution cannot look forward. Protofeathers must have evolved for a purpose they served at the time, like insulation.
