Roosevelt’s negative view of de Gaulle was reinforced by the numerous French exiles in the United States, many of whom were well connected in elite American circles. These included Jean Monnet and Alexis Leger who had both while in London tried to warn Churchill against making an agreement with de Gaulle in June 1940.
