The previously disunited parties of the left, from the Communists on the extreme left to the Radicals on the centre-left via the Socialists in the middle, reacted by forming an alliance called the Popular Front. At the elections of June 1936 the Popular Front triumphed. The Communists, who had previously had only a handful of députés, were now a major player in French politics. The Socialist leader Léon Blum became premier of the first Socialist-led government in French history.
