“If Sabran the First was not born of Cleolind,” she said eventually, “and I am not saying I believe it, Ead—then who was her mother? Who was the first Queen of Inys?” “I don’t know.”
“Piety can turn the power-hungry into monsters,” Ead said. “They can twist any teaching to justify their actions.”
She had led them from the depths of terror to the height of adoration. Sabran was golden-tongued.
Viscountess was an honorary title in Inys, used to raise a woman who was not of noble or holy blood. Never had it been bestowed upon one who was not an Inysh subject.
The way he gazed at her, she might have been a sunrise after years of night.
Then she turned, intending to slip away to her chamber—only to find Sabran waiting. Ead watched her as the floor cleared. So did the rest of the court. “Play a candle dance,” Sabran said.
“You may be a queen, but you are not my queen. I am not your subject, Sabran.” Ead stepped inside and shut the doors. “And that is why you can be certain that what was between us was real.”
“Tell me, Eadaz uq-Nāra,” she said softly, “am I a greater fool to want you still?”
“He had the sword. I was weak. A friend helped me escape . . . but I had to leave my Sabran. My little princess.” Sabran the First, the first queen regnant of Inys.
The Deceiver had himself been deceived.
Then he went to Nurtha, where I had raised him, and hanged himself from my hawthorn tree.
