A kindness there sure, but a hardness too, in the way her shoulders were set, in the way she faced the world head-on, never flinching away from something because she didn’t want to see it, never acting like a thing didn’t exist because it clashed with the way she wanted the world to be. Courage and kindness, hardness and determination. Things that, in his experience, rarely went together.
