Most of Berlin’s intercity rail stations became useless and were abandoned. The elevated rail stations above Nollendorfplatz and Bülowstrasse, on a line that went nowhere, became flea markets. And how was a subway system supposed to work in a walled city? Two subway lines connected northern and southern parts of West Berlin by passing under central East Berlin, gliding through ghostly stations where no train had stopped since 1961.
