Made for Friendship: The Relationship That Halves Our Sorrows and Doubles Our Joys

The thought of friendship with God rings hollow today because we’ve already hollowed out the idea of friendship in general.

Friendship should be more like a submarine, holding few and going deep. But we’ve made it more like a cruise ship, filled with lots of nice people whom we don’t know well at all.

We think of friendship more like the word drink (a word covering a whole range of liquids) and less like coffee (which is specific, and with its own features).

But if friend means everyone, then friend means nothing.
