I caught his arm. “Can you let me know how much it hurts when you hit the ground?” “What?” Clay’s mouth hung open slightly. “Because you’re about to hit it really hard.”
I ignored what Misha said, taking a perverse amount of joy in annoying the utter living crap out of him whenever I could.
“Now, was that so hard to admit?” “Yes,” I replied dryly. “It hurt me. Deep inside. I may never recover.”
“What’s your name?” I stopped and faced him again. “Seriously?” “What is your name?” he repeated—no, he demanded. My hackles raised. “It’s Mindya Business.” “That’s exceedingly...lame,” he retorted. I snorted. Like a little piglet. “I thought it was pretty clever.” “We obviously have two very different ideas of what makes something clever,” he said, and my eyes narrowed. “You do realize I’m going to find out sooner or later?” He would, but I’d be damned if I told him what it was. “Well, I guess you’re just going to have to wait for later. Peace out.” I flipped him the middle finger, sure he

“Have you’ve forgotten why we don’t have visitors here? Or are you just being recklessly selfish?” “Is there a third option?”
stared at him. “You’re dead. You don’t need a bathroom.” Peanut met my stare. “You don’t know me. You don’t know my life, my wants or needs.”
“So, he started getting dressed, and I was like hold me closer, tiny dancer, this is not the America I was promised, but it is the afterlife I’m here for.”
Why did they come all the way from DC to ask?” Peanut rose so that it looked like he was actually sitting on my bed. “I mean, hello, McFly, you have FaceTime and Skype.”
“You know, I expected you to make it at least a day before being seen by one of them.” “Well, you know me.” We headed down the stairs. “I like to exceed expectations.”
Wardens had a crazy fast metabolism, and the human DNA in me had the kind of metabolism that constantly thought I needed to store fat as if I were a bear about to enter hibernation.
Those hips shifted and he seemed to spread his thighs. “I’m starting to feel a little violated over here.”
“By the way, there’s a ghost sitting on your dresser,” I told him, and smiled evilly when I saw the blood drain from his face. “He’s name is Peanut, and he’s taken quite a liking to you. Have fun with that!”
“No pain, no gain,” he went on. “Sweat is glory.” “Are you sweating?” Peanut stopped and looked at me like I was half-dumb. “Ghosts don’t sweat.” My mouth dropped open. “Do you even listen to yourself when you speak?”
Misha’s brows lifted. “Why are you so violent?” I raised my hands, then dropped them. “I need serious help.”
“I know what you want,” he said, squeezing me against his side. “You want to be wanted, and there’s nothing wrong with that, Trin. Not at all.”
“You’re a strange Warden,” I whispered. One side of his lips kicked up. “And you’re just...strange.” “I think I’m offended.”
“Sorry about the living room. It’s kind of a mess. We were marathoning Avenger movies and we kind of built a pillow fort in the process.”
“You know Bael?” I asked. “Why, yes. All of us demons are friends on Facebook,” Roth replied, and my eyes narrowed.
“What?” I demanded, running my finger along the edge of my plate. “You’re doing really good.” “At what? Eating bacon? I’m extremely skilled at that.”
“I need you undressed from the waist up.” “What?” I gaped at him. “Usually a guy tells me I’m pretty before he demands that I take my shirt off.” He shot me a bland look. “Is that all it takes for you to take your shirt off?
“Speaking of ghosts, the one that came with you?” “Peanut?” “Yeah.” A pause. “Him. Can he...move things?” I grinned. “Yes. Did he move something?” “This morning my shoes were in the fridge.”
“I...” I really had no idea what to say as I turned to him, figuring the towel was more discreet than my bare back. “I, um, I’m still wet.” Those pale eyes flared with wintry heat as his gaze dipped. “Really?” he said, and I swore it sounded like a purr against my skin. My face burned as I realized what I’d said and how that could be perceived. “The salve—the salve is still wet and I thought I’d let it dry a little.” Zayne nodded slowly as he bit down on his lower lip.
“I hope we kept you guys waiting.” Roth slid into the booth across from us, followed by Cayman. “And yes, I meant that just the way it came out.”
“Do Trueborns like to kill indiscriminately?” Roth cocked his head as that amber gaze slid to me. “At this moment? Yes,” I said, annoyed. Zayne chuckled under his breath while Roth grinned and leaned forward. “I like you.” “That’s awesome to hear,” I murmured.
wanted to know more about Zayne. “I have questions.” A soft chuckle radiated from him and shook the bed. “There isn’t a single part of me that is surprised.”
“Are you busy?” he asked. “Leaning against the wall?” “Extremely busy. I try to do this at least once a day.”
“I’m guessing the sky is full of stars?” “It is, but the only ones that matter are the ones you see.”
“I’m not running from you now,” he said. “It seems I’m running after you now.”
“Just how distracted were you?” Zayne hesitated. “I think you could...feel just how distracted I was.”
A slow grin tugged at my lips. “You’re blushing.” His eyes closed. “You know, most people wouldn’t point that out.”
“You want to kiss me again, don’t you?” Every muscle in my body went tense. “Yes. I want—” Zayne kissed me.
“I like the way he says your name,” Peanut commented.
know you consort with demons and all kinds of things when it benefits the coven,” he replied smoothly. “So, let’s cut the political blessed-be bullshit about how you guys are good witches who worship trees and hold hands, singing ‘Kumbaya.’”
I glanced down at Bambi. Was that snake...purring? Bambi looked at me, showing its forked tongue. Alrighty, then.
I’ll find you. Wherever you go, I will find you.”
“I’m not leaving you, Zayne. I need you to concentrate and shift. If not, you—you’re going to die a virgin, Zayne. Do you want to die a virgin?” He laughed and it ended on a choking sound that sent my heart plummeting. “I cannot believe you just said that.”
