Rising oxygen levels messed up Earth’s thermostats because as yet there were no mechanisms that could absorb excess oxygen, so the buildup threatened to run out of control. Free oxygen broke down atmospheric methane, one of the most powerful of greenhouse gases, while photosynthesizing cyanobacteria consumed huge amounts of the other crucial greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide.
