Pat the bunny lies down. One doesn’t, in present-tense hiding, lay low or, in ambush, lay in wait. It’s “lie” all the way: I lie low; I lie in wait. That said, one does lay a trap for one’s enemy, and given the chance, one will lay that enemy low.
