“In the wilderness” focuses on the theme of the journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land, which yields a three‐part structure to the book: Chapters 1.1–10.10 contain descriptions of the wilderness camp; chs 10.11–21.35 tell of the tragic wilderness journey of the first generation; and chs 22.1–36.13 describe the second generation of Israelites on the plains of Moab as they prepare for entry into the Promised Land.
