Shortly before Nevermind was released, John Rosenfelder, a young promo guy whom we all called Rosie, earnestly told him that there was enthusiasm for “Smells Like Teen Spirit” among some of the stoner college radio guys steeped in psychedelics. Kurt sneeringly replied, “I want a tie-dyed T-shirt made with the blood of Jerry Garcia.”

Kurt asked Krist to “tell a joke” and his old friend obliged: “A nurse told a doctor, ‘The invisible man is here,’ and the doctor replied, ‘Tell him I can’t see him now.’”
