Never expect. It had been the lesson of his life.

He had thought that as he grew nearer to his own death the unanswerable questions would pierce him unbearably, and now he found to his shock and delight that he had no need for questions. What would happen—would happen.

Sometimes he still wished he could go back and do it all differently, but he couldn’t. Other times he wondered why life was like that: you did stupid things and couldn’t take them back no matter how much you wanted to; there were no second chances.
